With grace and beauty this magnificent 19th Century work of art is a sight to behold. Between 1860-1880 black jewelry was the height of fashion and while it was worn for mourning purposes it was also worn for sentimental reasons, and considered to be high fashion.
This high relief, deeply cut gutta percha cameo broach is a fine example of high fashion.. The woman is exceptionally beautiful with long, flowing hair and a fully developed deeply cut cloak . She stands in high relief on an unpolished background and base with a wide roped frame.
The pin measures 2 1/4” tall by 2” across including the pin extension and is 3/4” high. It is in excellent condition and guaranteed to be Victorian.
There is a possibility this maybe vulcanite. They are materials from the same period and can be difficult to differentiate.
