Museum quality is a rarity these days. This mid-19th century necklace is a work of hand carved art and uniquely rare. The ivory plaque is carved in one piece. It depicts a jungle scene complete with a mother and father tiger and their cub that is nestled into his mother.
An elaborate scene is in the background which includes native palm trees, an elephant with a carriage on top in which a monkey is riding and cut out mountains. The scene is hand painted and the top bead has more hand painted palm trees.
The chain are oval elephant ivory beads that are knotted using silk.
The necklace chain measures 25” and the pendant is an additional 2 7/8” by 1 7/8”. It weighs 28.4 grams and is extremely high quality. It is in excellent vintage condition with no cracks or breaks and guaranteed or the era.
